Yesterday afternoon we went on a nice outing to the Stockyards! We went with Mom and Dad, and Pitch and Rosy, our new family members from India! It was a nice Texas experience, except for the zillions of loud people on motorcycles... but we had fun anyway.Sunday, February 24, 2008

GERMS!
Near our house, there is a place called "Let's Jump" that has all sorts of indoor bounce houses. Aidan has been asking to go there for some time, but it seems like the only time we think of it is right in the middle of cold and flu season, and those bounce houses just seem so germy to me. Plus, we can do them for free twice a year at church. So I've been telling him that maybe we can go in the summer, when there aren't so many germs around.
So, yesterday, I was trying to figure out if I should take Aidan to Cubbies at church or not, because I wasn't sure if he had pink eye. His eyes had been red since Wednesday, but I really thought it probably had more to do with his cold and sinus congestion. Aidan desperately wanted to go to Cubbies because it was Crazy Hair Night...
Mom: I just don't think we should go to Cubbies. You don't want to give pink eye to the other kids if you have it.
Aidan: Awww, but I want my hair to stick up with gel!
Mom: I know, I'm sorry...
Aidan: Oh, I know! (lightbulb turning on) Let's go to that bounce house place! Is it open today???
Mom: Why in the world would I take you there if I think you shouldn't go to Cubbies???
Aidan: Well, that's where all the sick people go... to the bounce house place!

Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day was also "Grandma Day," the day when Grandma comes to watch the boys while I teach at the school. Aidan and Grandma made some yummy Valentines cupcakes. Later, some violin students came and brought us some iced sugar cookies that happened to have the same color icing and sprinkes as the cupcakes. Aidan came out of his room after rest time, and saw the cookies on the table, and came into the lesson to tell me, "Mom! The cupcakes got all FLAT!!" We sorted that one out, and he was relieved that nothing had happened to the cupcakes!Wednesday, February 6, 2008
My Little Chef
Tonight I was making dinner, and let Aidan help. I decided that 4 1/2 was a good age to learn to use a sharp knife. (It wasn't that sharp!!) Aidan helped me cut fresh green beans, and did a great job! He didn't cut himself or even do anything foolish, which was good. He kept saying, "I'm a real chef!" (Thanks, Aimee, for letting us borrow Ratatouille!)

So long everyone, I'm...
...off to the funny farm! My children have driven me over the edge into insanity...
Poor Gresham has had a fever/cold this week, and irrationality seems to be one of the symptoms. Let me start at the beginning...
We desperately needed to get out of the house, so this afternoon we went down to the mall to see Jordan at his store and run a few errands. We left mid-afternoon after Gresham woke up screaming from a very short nap. He likes to go out and ride in the stroller, so I figured that this was a good move. I had in mind a relaxing afternoon. The boys had in mind a plot to drive mommy crazy.
The mall was a delightful experience. Gresham's tactic was to whine and wiggle. We tried on shoes. He ran around the shoe department, which led Aidan to run around the shoe department. With no socks or shoes on. Then, when I put Gresham back in the stroller, he screamed like his life was ending.
Aidan did his part with non-stop negotiating.
Aidan: So did you decide if we could go to Toys R Us?
Mom: No, I haven't thought about it yet.
Aidan: Well, when are you going to think about it?
Mom: I don't know, it's awfully hard to think with you two...
Aidan: You should have just thought about it in the car on the way here.
Mom: Ok, there's my decision. We're not going.
Then we went to Babies R Us to look at strollers. I'm looking for one that is lightweight, but it has to have cupholders. I recently sold one on craigslist that I'm trying to replace. I took one stroller down from the shelf to check it out, but when I tried to put it back, I couldn't, because Aidan was on the shelf instead. I guess it looked like a nice place to drive his cars.
I tried to think about strollers, but it's hard with Aidan's non-stop chattering.
"Look Mom, they have baby spoons. Buy them. They're 3 dollars. (like he knows!!!) Oh, get this stroller. Look at the wheels on that one. Buy that one. Why not?"
So we left Babies R Us with no stroller and a few less brain cells. The plan was to go out for dinner, but I knew Gresham wouldn't eat much, and Aidan just wanted peanut butter and jelly, so we went home. Unfortunately, we had just enough bread for Aidan and Gresham, and I was really wishing for the sandwich at Panera I was going to get.
When we got home, Gresham started crying in full force. I gave him toast with peanut butter. He screamed and refused to eat it. He pointed to something in the distance and wanted that. I gave him half a banana. He ate a few bites and started pointing to something and whining again. I offered him a yogurt (Side note: I don't normally do this, but he has hardly eaten anything since Wednesday). He got all excited about the yogurt. I opened it. I stirred it. I handed him the yogurt and the spoon. He screamed and cried and turned red in the face. I took the yogurt back and offered it to Aidan. Then Gresham screamed in protest and desperately wanted that yogurt. Aidan ate three bites and decided he didn't want it because it had too much cinnamon (it was strawberry banana). We ended the meal with each of them having a Chips Ahoy cookie. At this point, I started counting down the minutes to bed time. At least we won't have to do a bath, I thought. At that very moment, Gresham wiped his cookie covered hand all through his hair.
So much for that thought...
Now they are in bed, and I'm packing for the funny farm. I'll come back for their highschool graduations. Maybe by then they can wipe their own cookie fingers.

Our musical pursuits...
After an unsuccessful attempt at learning cello last spring, we are starting over this year with violin. Aidan has had his violin for a week, and is doing GREAT! He was ready for it this time.
Gresh the climber, playing the piano..
Ok, this has nothing to do with music, but I had to put this picture in. Gresham is learning to eat with silverware, which has been a horrible experience. He is really a "by self" kind of guy, so we have had better success getting him to eat what we offer if he feeds himself, but the clean-up after each meal is unreal...Hawks!
Our children are really at enjoyable ages right now. 15 months is super cute. Gresham is talking (new words every day!) and learning so many things. And he isn't 2 yet, which is the best part... Actually, the terrible twos for Aidan started at 18 months, so we'll see...
Age 4 is also fun. It's a huge improvement over age 3. Aidan is doing so many fun things - learning to read, making actual friends (instead of just playing in the same room as other kids), and he's becoming sweeter, although not any less strong willed!
One of our recent activities has been learning about hawks. We have LOTS of hawks in our area, and we see them perched on power lines whenever we go out. Aidan has been interested in them for a while, so we did some internet research together and learned that we are probably seeing Red Tailed Hawks. We also learned quite a bit about them! We made a life-sized hawk out of posterboard, and the best part is that he is really retaining all this new knowledge because he is so interested in it! This is the fun of homeschooling - being able to pursue his interests and learn when the moment strikes!
Thanks for enjoying life with such exuberance, Aidan, and here's to many more exciting projects...
